Solo National’s Golden Anniversary “Pop-Up” Museum
By Jim Weidenbaum, SCCA Foundation Board of Directors
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the SCCA Solo Nationals a temporary museum was created at the Lincoln airport, the home of the championship races. The museum was well-situated at the perimeter of Lincoln airport, close to the paddock area in what is normally an airport maintenance shed. Forget about your man-cave or she-shed, this shed was in a totally different universe as the SCCA Solo community proudly displayed race cars from each decade the SCCA Solo Nats have been held, featuring a total of 10 race cars.
Former head of SCCA Solo racing and current SCCA Foundation Board of Director Howard Duncan chaired the Solo National’s “pop-up” museum, who together with Robert Chrismas and a core team of SCCA volunteers created an outstanding exhibit to display solo race cars and racing memorabilia. Tables were set-up for each decade the Solo Nats have been held, with each car having an information placard to inform attendees of the car’s history.
In addition to the automotive eye candy, there were trophies, championship jackets, and an SCCA Foundation information area. It was only fitting, in the golden year 50th running of the Solo Nats, that a tribute was built by SCCA members to celebrate those who came before them. Commemorating past championships, honoring racing greats, and celebrating our solo racing community’s amazing championship event at Lincoln all serve to strengthen the Club’s foundation literally and figuratively. Solo Nats racers once again raised funds for the SCCA Foundation through the “tire wash” station while the Nebraska Region generously donated to SCCA Foundation proving again the willingness of our members to “pay it forward.”
