Helping teens make smart driving decisions
According to the CDC, in 2020 some 2,800 teens between 13 and 19 were killed, and 227,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes. That’s six teens dying every day from motor vehicle accidents. A leading risk factor is that as a result of inexperience behind the wheel, teens are more likely than older drivers to underestimate dangerous situations and to make critical decisions errors that lead to serious crashes. We are working to provide critical behind-the-wheel experiences and training to help today’s teen drivers avoid becoming part of these statistics.
The SCCA Foundation works with local SCCA Regions to provide trained in-car driving instructors as well as valuable classroom experience for each teen driver. The Foundation provides the instructional workbooks, instructor and volunteer shirts, and other materials needed to host a successful program. We also provide financial support as needed toward site rental or other expenses.
The Foundation also funds the SCCA National Coordinator for TireRack Street Survival. The TRSS Coordinator actively recruits SCCA Regions to host new schools, supports the steps needed to open registration and market the events, and provides other logistical support to ensure each school is a success for the hosting SCCA Region and the teen drivers. “The Street Survival program is the best! My son participated in the program staffed by Philly SCCA club members last spring. Today it paid huge dividends. He was driving home on a two lane county road, when the minivan in front of him was turning left and was broadsided by a small car traveling at a high rate of speed from the oncoming lane. The car veered directly toward our son. He calmly performed a lane change, which he practiced as part of the Street Survival program. He avoided a head on collision, drove through the debris in the oncoming lane and traveled to a safe location to ensure his tires were ok. He then returned to the scene of the accident to provide his contact info to police as a witness, not a part of the collision.”
