Skip Barber Racing School Sweepstakes Winner: Lorraine Kennedy

Through a fundraising sweepstakes, SCCA Foundation offered one lucky winner the opportunity to attend a three-day Skip Barber Racing School – the legendary training program that has helped many of the world's top racers. This three-day school can lead to an SCCA Road Racing Novice Permit, be used to enhance core driving techniques before the upcoming season, or simply serve as a fantastic motorsport adventure.

The SCCA is pleased to say that the 3-Day Skip Barber Racing School (Mustang Program) was won by SCCA member Lorraine “Rainy” Kennedy of Pueblo, Colorado. Kennedy was thrilled by the news that she won the latest SCCA Foundation Sweepstakes. She is a current member of Colorado Region, having previously been active with Washington, DC and Steel City Regions. Rainy is a long-time SCCA member who started off autocrossing before shifting to road racing, competing in SSGT and G-Production, while also crewing for several Prod racing teams and proudly working in flagging and communications for the DC Region.

When asked about her motivation for entering the SCCA Foundation Sweepstakes? “I always want to plug the heroes who make the racing possible. I donated to the Foundation to take a chance at winning, but my heart is promoting more Women on Track and the upgrades that can only improve track safety.”

What a deserving winner. Congratulations Rainy and please enjoy your Skip Barber 3-day Race School!

The Total Package

What is the complete prize package? For starters, there’s the three-day GT School where drivers wheel a Mustang GT around one of many well-known circuits Skip Barber Racing School visits each year. That alone is valued at $6,395, and the location and date of the training will be determined between the prize winner and Skip Barber Racing School.

Added into this sweepstakes is a Gold Damage Liability Reduction insurance policy, valued at $1,650, which caps driver liability for damage to a vehicle during the school. Then there’s an additional $1,500 in cash to help with travel expenses.

The three-day Skip Barber Racing School curriculum combines classroom sessions with practical hands-on seat time to help students master the fundamentals of racing – and satisfies a prerequisite for those interested in obtaining a Club, professional, or international racing license.

On day one of the school, students spend time in the classroom before heading out on an autocross course where instructors teach how to operate the race car in preparation for on-track training. Students then review the proper racing line, race style downshifting, threshold braking, and cornering techniques.

On the second day, a downshift talk and exercise takes place before “stop box” lapping sessions where students get instant feedback in the race car. Students also do additional braking exercises and learn to read the various racing competition flags used worldwide. After lunch, students have a brake and tech talk before an intense exercise of proper braking techniques.

The last day of instruction at the school incorporates racecraft. Students put everything they have learned to the test. Included are practice race starts and restarts, passing exercises, and plenty of open lapping sessions.

Helping SCCA Foundation

A 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, SCCA Foundation’s mission is to support the Sports Car Club of America by providing inclusive opportunities for motorsports competition, safety, education, and historical preservation.

Proceeds from this sweepstakes will empower SCCA Foundation to continue efforts such as the Tire Rack Street Survival program, which offers life-saving advanced driver training for teens. SCCA Foundation also provides opportunities for American veterans to engage in motorsports activities through SCCA events, and empowers women in motorsports through the SCCA Women on Track program. The organization also preserves the history of American Motorsports through the SCCA Archives housed at the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen, NY.
